Automations let you set smart rules that trigger timely, personalized outreach—so Momentum can help you stay connected to donors without missing a beat.
Momentum Automations help you stay in touch with donors—without having to remember every detail yourself. You set the rules once, and Momentum keeps your action queue filled with smart, timely outreach prompts based on donor activity (or inactivity), so no one slips through the cracks.
What Are Automations?
Automations are “if-this-then-that” rules that watch your donor segments for key moments. When a condition is met—like a donor hasn't been contacted in 60 days or a birthday is coming up—Momentum automatically generates a new recommendation in your inbox.
These are personal reminders to take action, complete with AI-drafted messages or templates to make outreach quick and thoughtful.
Momentum has 5 default automations which can be configured per portfolio segment, helping to give shape to each segment's overall journey with you.
- Get In Touch - receive a notification if you've been out of contact with a donor for X days.
- Birthday - send a happy birthday note for donors with birth dates on file
- Gift Stewardship - tailor a personal thank you as soon as your donor's gift hits the CRM (note, this is not meant to replace the formal receipting process)
- Email Follow-up - sending a message that needs a reply? let Momentum remind you to get back in touch if a donor doesn't respond within a set number of days
- Giving Anniversary - anniversary of the each donor's first gift to your institution; meant to celebrate milestone giving anniversaries
Configuring Automations
Click into the vertical ellipses (the Momentum quick menu) to access an automation's settings.
Now you can configure a few settings per automation, including standard language or assign a template/cadence.
How Automation Triggers Work
Each automation includes three key parts:
- Who: The segment of donors the rule applies to.
- Trigger: The condition that causes the automation to fire (e.g., “No outreach in 60 days,” “Gift anniversary,” “Follow-up needed”).
- Action: The AI prompt or prewritten template that will be used to generate a draft outreach recommendation.
Think of automations as your personal fundraising assistant—always watching your portfolio and teeing up the right next step.
Reviewing Recommendations
When a trigger is met, the new outreach appears in your Inbox, just like any other recommendation—but with a label showing the trigger (e.g., “Birthday” or “No Response”).
From there, you can:
- Edit and send the message
- Dismiss it if it’s not needed
- See the donor’s full history to decide what’s best
All actions taken through automations are logged back to your CRM automatically.
Pro Tips
- Keep it Simple: Start with just one or two key automations (e.g., 60-day no contact, birthday greetings).
- Use Segments Wisely: Automations rely on segments—so make sure your segments are clean and intentional.
- Update Over Time: If your cadence of outreach changes, update your automations to match.
- Mix AI + Templates: Use AI prompts for more personal messages, or link templates when messaging should be standardized.

This would include automations such as:
- If a donor makes a gift above $5,000, kickoff a New Mid-level Donor Cadence
